House approves pared down aid budget plan
The House Labor Committee backed a compromise bill by 19 to 9 to raise the federal minimum wage from 1 to 1.25 an hour gradually and extend coverage to about 3.9 million workers. The measure mirrors a Senate plan and would boost pay for roughly 3.3 million voters, with a party line split and support from 17 Democrats and 3 Republicans. The wage would rise to 1.15 by November 1 for workers currently earning 1.00.
