Hearst Judge Carter Dies in San Francisco
Oliver J. Carter, a veteran federal judge who presided over the Patricia Hearst trial, died of a heart attack at 65. He collapsed at his home and was pronounced dead on arrival at Ralph K. Davies Medical Center. Prosecutor James Browning said the Hearst case would go to reassignment. Hearst, 22, was convicted on armed bank robbery charges for the April 1974 San Francisco bank holdup. Carter had sentenced her to up to 35 years, with possible reduction after psychiatric evaluations. He had recently suffered a mild heart event and underwent brief hospitalization.
