Carter faces family opposition on naming Abzug to committee
President Carter plans to appoint Bella Abzug as co-director of a new National Advisory Committee for Women despite objections from Rosalynn Carter and Judy Carter wife of his son Jack. Critics cite Abzug’s East Coast feminism while supporters note her political clout and ally Anne Wexler. Abzug expects FBI checks and says White House support remains, while other potential leaders like Anne Saunier weigh into the process. Carmen Votan may also be named co-director as part of the panel.
