Laborary Tests Ordered For Locked Wheel Gear In Train Crash
Illinois Central officials ordered laboratory tests Friday on the wheel assembly that locked at zero miles per hour and precipitated the derailment of a Southbound City of New Orleans train. The wheel will be sent to an Illinois Central maintenance shop in Paducah Kentucky for inspection and may be analyzed in a laboratory with a report issued in months. Authorities focus on an electrical malfunction in the traction motor as a possible cause while tracks were under investigation. The Amtrak era crash killed eleven and injured ninety four with four engines and most cars overturned.
