Space Station Plan Dropped by Defense Department
The Pentagon canceled the Air Force Manned Orbital Laboratory program after $1.3 billion spent with another $300 million to close it out, bringing total abortive military space project costs since 1951 to about $11 billion. MOL would have carried two men for 30 days and faced $3 billion final costs. Dynasoar earlier failed at $405 million. Major contractors included McDonnell-Douglas, General Electric, and Martin Marietta.
