House Votes To Make Payola Crime
The House Commerce Committee approved a bill to criminalize payola and fixed quiz programs with penalties up to 10 000 dollars fine and possible jail terms. The measure would empower the FCC to levy 1000 dollars daily on stations failing to comply and would require disclosure and reporting of any payments to broadcasters. The committee deleted FCC networks licensing provisions from the bill.
