Government Revises List of Worst off Jobless Areas

Washington reports 20 major industrial centers and seven smaller areas placed on a new list of cities hardest hit by long term unemployment. Labor officials say these areas may receive added federal aid to help economic recovery. The designation follows Eisenhower administration criteria, citing declines in coal mining textiles machinery and other key local industries. Endorsed by an emergency urban aid committee the list notes many Southern Western and Northeastern locales. To qualify a city must show high unemployment relative to the national average over several years along with current rates and no near term improvement.
