Chicago Won’t Return To Big Time Football Says Chancellor

Chicago will not pursue major college football, says Chancellor Lawrence A. Kimpton. He questions scheduling rivals like Illinois or Michigan, notes an undergraduate body of 1,500 with many not yet graduated or female students, and favors playing Ivy League schools if any return were considered. He cites Amos Alonzo Stagg’s legacy and recalls Chicago’s 1939 football exit and 1946 Big Ten departure.

California course hole in one odds defied again

Alhambra California. A month after the new municipal golf course opened three local players notched holes in one on the 120 yard eighth. Assistant pro Emil Seedeller had called such feats almost impossible but later aced the same hole himself admitting a poor swing yet a better one on the ninth yielded only a par. Gus Bell of the Reds drove in 105 runs in 1953, first Redlegs outfielder to pass 100 in a season.
