Evans' 273man crew rescued by Kearsarge in Sea Spirit collision
Survivors of the Evans disaster were taken aboard the USS Kearsarge, which rushed from 85 miles away. One man was critically injured and flown to a hospital at Cam Ranh Bay. The Evans was the seventh U S warship in three years to suffer a major at sea incident, during Sea Spirit maneuvers with about 40 warships from six Southeast Asia Treaty Organization nations. The Melbourne plowed through, killing or injuring sailors as it escorted the carrier.

Nixon Denounces College Extremists At Mundt Library Dedication
President Nixon attacked student radicals for arrogance while urging honesty in American life. He warned that invasions and nonnegotiable demands endanger all rights, spoke at General Beadle State College, Sioux Falls to 7,500, and emphasized preserving rights by respecting others. Gas main blasts demolish homes in Gary injuring nine
An overloaded gas main exploded in Gary Indiana causing a hour long series of blasts on the south side. Six homes were demolished and 19 damaged or set afire prompting a 56 block evacuation. At least nine injured, one critically with second and third degree burns. Fire Chief Holliday put damage at 340000. Evacuees were urged to open windows and a curfew was set 8 pm to 6 am. Police and fire units from Gary, Hammond, and East Chicago aided searches.

Carter Names Circulated For Correction Commissioner Post
State house sources on Tuesday listed Morris J. Carter Anderson police chief 1941 48 as a candidate for the new correction commissioner alongside James R. Beasley and George Denton both former Department of Correction officials. The interim appointee would follow James E. McCart who quit after Gov. Whitcomb said he was discharged. Carter denied any talks saying it is speculation as far as I am concerned and he has said nothing to anyone including the governor. City Court Judge Michael A. Tancey dismissed assault and battery charges filed by an Elwood woman against her fiancé. Fire roars through Kansas City apartments killing twelve
A midtown Kansas City blaze on Tuesday killed 12 residents including six in one family and eight children. About 100 residents escaped via stairs and ladders as flames shot over 59 feet. Lawrence M. Smith and his infant son perished after leaping from a third-floor window. Smith’s wife Barbara and their 2-month-old daughter also died. Bodies of six were found in a third-floor apartment. investigators named Rex and Tina Johnson and their children among the dead, while Edmound Godden Jr and Scarlett, ages 5 and 3, perished in the same unit. Fire damage concentrated on the top floor with smoke and water affecting the lower levels. Families in a mixed middle-income neighborhood were left homeless.
