Eagleton Named McGovern Running Mate For 1972
The Missouri senator at 42 was chosen by Sen. George McGovern as his vice presidential candidate after aligning with the McGovern camp in Miami Beach. Eagleton rose from St. Louis circuit attorney to lieutenant governor and attorney general, then to U.S. senator, championing labor, consumer protection, environmental acts, and a war powers measure. He advocates wage and price controls and backed a ceasefire in Vietnam, with a noted reformist record and a political family background. He is married to Barbara Smith with two children.
