First American Statement on Equality Found in 1776 Letter
NEW YORK UPI The first statement that inalienable rights in the Declaration of Independence apply to Negroes as well as whites comes from a 1776 letter by Henry Laurens, a South Carolina planter and slave owner. Columbia University will publish the priceless letter for libraries on Saturday, the 188th anniversary of the signing. Laurens wrote of abhorring slavery and seeking manumission for slaves, foreseeing opposition from laws, customs, and avarice. Phillip Neil Bouslog is to be ordained Sunday at Frankton Christian Church after graduating from Johnson Bible College.
