Pay Board Rejects Trainmen Contract

The Pay Board rejected a motion to approve the AFL-CIO United Transportation Union trainmen contract covering 140,000 workers after two days of debate. A later vote to push approval to next week failed by one vote amid splits between business and labor members over work rules and a 42 percent raise over 3½ years. Some board members favored approving only through April 1, as with a prior rail agreement.
