U S Plans Strike Near DMZ Amid Vietnam War Tensions
The United States reported a sixth protective reaction strike against North Vietnam after a Shrike missile hit a SAM site just as enemy forces prepared to fire. Aerial battles continued with Vietnamese forces firing on U S planes from Gulf of Tonkin carriers and Da Nang. Nine militiamen died in Kiên Hoa. North Vietnamese artillery targeted Don Nhon as Long Cheng became a focal point of activity. Army Secretary Froehlke warned most attacks would fail politically, not militarily, during an election year.
