Gas Gangrene Strikes Jet Crash Survivors
Five survivors of the Eastern Airlines TriStar crash in the Everglades developed gas gangrene from oxygen-deprived wounds. Three improved after treatment in high pressure oxygen chambers at the Miami Heart Institute, while two remained in critical condition. The crash killed 9% of the 176 aboard, and questions about the pilot’s medical records were raised as Eastern sought the pilot’s doctor. Jerry Eskow, first class survivor, described the plane’s disintegration and his escape. A local obituary notes the death of 83-year-old Davie A. Canaday of Anderson, with service details.
