Indiana lawmakers battles over ending the household goods tax and raising unemployment compensation. Democrats push for the tax repeal while Republicans warn about court tests, with bills advancing on compensation limits and related property tax changes.
The election board faces pressure from a possible ruling that could hold them in contempt of Judge Whiteman. Contempt against county commissioners was withheld. Commissioners Foust and McCord told Judge Smith they would avoid further delays in distributing voting machines for Tuesday's election as balloting prep continues. The Supreme Court remains the likely next step depending on whether Whiteman or Smith orders are challenged.
De Gaulle urged a Geneva meeting of the United States Britain France the Soviet Union and Red China to study ending the UN crisis and restoring the UN charter. He noted the five power talks could help save the UN and highlighted shifts in power from the Security Council to the General Assembly.
In Philadelphia Mississippi the Neshoba County grand jury says it cannot complete its inquiry into the three civil rights workers slayings until the FBI provides its evidence. Federal grand jury indicts 18 white men from Philadelphia and Meridian on conspiracy in a Ku Klux Klan plot.
Senator Branigin urged moderation in operating expenses as he analyzed a 1965-67 budget for four state supported colleges. He cited raises for Indiana University President Elvis Stahr and Purdue President Frederick Hovde as evidence of high costs. Ball State President John Emens and Raleigh Holmstedt also received sizable increases drawing criticism from Sen. Maddox who called the timing bad.
Funeral services for Minnie Mae Lee 76 of 207 ER Broadway will be held at 1 30 p m Saturday at Karl M Kyle Funeral Home with the Rev Edwin Grant officiating. Burial is in Park View Cemetery and friends may visit after 7 p m Friday. Mrs Lee is survived by a daughter Mary Margaret Lowe of Indianapolis a sister A L Thurston of Indianapolis three grandchildren and one nephew. She was a member of First Methodist Church and affiliated with the Eastern Star and Art Circle. She died from an automobile accident south of Alexandria on Ind 28.
Tucson coroner's inquest opened into the apparent suicide of Eugene Francis McDonald III, 23, heir to the Zenith Radio fortune. McDonald's body was found with wrist slashes and a bullet wound outside a dark room near his rented $50,000 home, a .22 caliber pistol nearby.
