Governor Bowen announced a formal request for federal disaster aid, citing two priorities emergency relief for those in peril and road clearance. He warned the cost to clear roads could reach nearly a million dollars and named 40 plus counties facing especially critical conditions. National Guard units labored around the clock to clear I-65 between Lafayette and Gary using wreckers bulldozers and tanks as trailers laden with cargo trapped by snow blocked 75 trucks north of Lafayette.
