Snow and ice conditions linger after a weekend storm as temperatures struggle to rise. Roads remain dangerous with several property damage incidents and injuries from falls reported in Anderson. Officials say county schools largely open while some closures persist amid ongoing snow removal efforts.

President Eisenhower agreed to support a Democratic proposed 51 billion dollar pay as you go highway program. The plan would finance road building over 13 years through higher taxes on gasoline and tires, announced after a White House meeting with GOP leaders Martin and Knowland.
Youth ages 11 to 15 in Anderson are urged to register for the 1956 Soap Box Derby. Derby Headquarters at Hunter-Chevrolet, 603 Meridian St., requires a parent to accompany entrants for registration.

An old Bulletin-Herald Want Ad mocks romance with a list of surplus gear. It features a Simpson multimeter, a tube tester, a tube rejuvenator, a solder gun and tubes. It notes 15 people in Anderson called about the items and promotes selling via the newspaper.
Britain proposed UN forces be stationed between Israel and Arab neighbors during the Eisenhower Eden talks, but the plan drew a cool response from the United States. In Indianapolis federal mediator Arthur Pierson said talks to end the four week Mallory Co strike will restart Wednesday. The session marks the first with company officials and the International Union of Electrical Workers since workers rejected a proposed contract last weekend. About 13,200 workers are affected across three local plants.
A. C. Schliewen resigns from Pierce Governor Company after serving in executive roles since 1953. He will join White Motor Company in Cleveland, Ohio, and assume duties after leaving Pierce March 1. Schliewen, from Plainfield New Jersey, has two children and plans to remain in the city through next summer for his kids to finish school.

Norwegian forces seized eight additional Russian fishing ships after a two day action that totaled 14 ships. A factory ship near the coast was stopped with a shot across its bow. Norway held crews in custody as foreign ministers rushed to Oslo to address the incident.
A $34,000 addition is awarded for the west side of the original St John’s Hospital building. The seven room structure will measure 23 by 34 feet and sits on the former Hickey home site donated by Mr. and Mrs. Jon Hickey. The project aligns with safety recommendations from insurance directors and the state fire marshal as part of the hospital’s modernization. The Hickey property once hosted the hospital’s first building opened June 9, 1894, by the Sisters of the Holy Cross.
Brig Gen John R B Noyes 54 dies in Nome hospital after Alaska National Guard plane crash in subarctic mountains. Three others survive, including Maj Robert Kolb and Sgt Richard August. Two pilots aided searchers after the wreck. All are Nome residents.
A White House aide says President Eisenhower looks fine and a Indiana presidential primary entry could occur. N. Craig says he has no politics to share but believes health could allow Eisenhower to be a candidate. He met with Sherman Adams and Fred A. Seaton during a visit.
Joseph Eugene Baxter 26 of Muncie faces first degree burglary and auto banditry charges in Madison Circuit Court over an alleged theft of arms and ammunition from a gunsmith near Alexandria. He pleaded not guilty at arraignment before Judge Russell E. Stewart. Other circuit actions included cases dismissed on motion, a mandatory injunction preserving attorney access to prisoners, and Richard Edwin Sira pleading guilty to escape and receiving a one year term.
County Treasurer Walter Hays announced that 1956 real estate and personal property tax statements have been mailed to Jackson and Fall Creek Township taxpayers. Previously Boone and Dueck Creek Township notices were sent, with plans to mail other units as soon as received from the county auditor.
Otto Sanders a 74 year old man from 1820 West 27th Street was driving northeast on Pendleton Avenue when his car struck a Belt Railroad switch engine at the Pendleton crossing. He was taken to St. John's Hospital for bruises and cuts to the right side of his face and held for observation. Patrolman Sam Adams investigated for the Anderson Police Department.
