Labor Ties With Washington Deteriorate in 1971
In 1971 organized labor faced worsening relations with the Nixon administration, with major strikes in rail, soft coal, shipping and telephones. AFL-CIO chief Meany condemned the wage price freeze as unfair that ignored profits, while officials argued he was out of step with workers. Dockhands, steel and port sectors saw walkouts amid wage disputes and a Pay Board mechanism. The year featured high unemployment and ongoing labor unrest across key industries.
