Once In A Century Crop Failure Hits Soviet Economy

The 1972 drought and cold winter caused a major winter kill of grain seedings and a drought across wide areas, lowering the harvest by an estimated 30 million tons and prompting a billion dollars in grain imports from the United States. Brezhnev called the year “unprecedentedly difficult” while Moscow pursued rapid trade expansion with Washington and Western technology. Labor productivity rose only 5.5 percent in 1972, below the 6.3 percent in 1971 and far from the 6.8 percent target for the 1971-75 plan, intensifying calls to improve efficiency and growth.

Ford recalls 233 school buses for parking brake defect

Ford Motor Co recalls 233 1972 and 1973 model school buses to check a possible parking brake defect. A plastic air tube may run over the exhaust, melting and causing spontaneous brake engagement with loss of air pressure. The issue could produce an abrupt stop but not as severe as main brakes. The recall excludes the eel braking system.
