Doctor pleased as Pat Barclay receives liver transplant
Dr. Joseph Fortner at Sloan Kettering reports Pat Barclay, a Pendleton boy near five, in excellent condition after a rare liver transplant. The operation, about 15 hours, preserves the original liver as an auxiliary organ while the donor liver functions. Fortner calls the procedure unusual yet safer in many respects and notes Pat's recovery began after a period of massive hemorrhaging and infections.
