West Berlin clashes test tense East West spillover
About 3 500 East German Communists attempted to storm West Berlin in a bid to disrupt a French sector meeting. Police used clubs and water cannons to drive back the rioters as the clash overshadows Cold War strains. Prime Minister Eden warned the Arab Israel dispute remains highly dangerous while pledging to push for settlement with the United States. Inland Container Corp announced a $250000 grant to Indiana University Law School to launch a five year practical law program.

West German Agent who Defected to Communists Now Defects Again

His return rekindles a scandal over the Adenauer era when a top security post was given to a man viewed as unstable and potentially treacherous. A parliamentary committee completed testimony to determine if he acted as a double agent for the Communists.

Monday told a congressional committee he did not believe John deserted with traitorous intent. John, dubbed the man with a thousand secrets, spent two million dollars yearly in a West German equivalent of the FBI. After deserting to the East he claimed West Germany was Nazi dominated and sought reunification. Allies say he was a long known disgruntled asset, kept in seclusion in a Potsdam villa while scribbling memoirs. Berlin reports he was monitored by Communist police amid fears of another escape attempt.
