A Hammond woman Opal Collins, 25, and Elmer F Flowers of Terre Haute were spared immediate execution as Indiana Governor commuted their death sentences to life terms. Collins admitted killing her paraplegic husband and two sisters. Flowers was convicted of killing his ex wife and others. Both await transfer to Michigan City prison for possible later execution.
Farmers across 21 states face referendums on corn and four other crops to decide production and price support programs for 1957. Arthur Fontaine longtime Decker's store manager and civic leader in Anderson died at home yesterday at 6 a.m from a heart attack. Funeral services are set for Wednesday at 1 30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church with Rev George S Taggart. interment East Maplewood Cemetery. Friends may call at Baker Brothers Funeral Home this afternoon. Fontaine had led the local Decker's since 1927 and served in the Chamber of Commerce Kiwanis Club and Retail Division.
