Communal Dwellers Thrive on Molasses Sales Farm Life
In Summertown Tennessee the Joyaughum mill led by Steve Gaskin and followers of The Farm pursue a self sufficient community. They grow sorghum and vegetables, package molasses, run a store and school. About 400 members live on seven homes on a 1.0 acre farm. They ban alcohol meat and hard drugs and require marriage for pregnancy. Gaskin, 86, a former San Francisco State professor, envisions The Farm as a money crop and aims to live apart from neighbors with respect for county authorities.
