Muskie Seeks Solid California Backing for 1976 Bid
Senator Edmund Muskie praised growing support ahead of a formal 1976 presidential bid. At a Washington news conference he announced California endorsements from Sen. Tunney and Assembly Speaker Moretti, and said he will unveil his year’s plans on January 4. The Tunney Moretti boosts, alongside Californian fundraising aims, mark a key step as Muskie’s campaign builds a West Coast base. Cranston’s neutrality lingered as aides expect his eventual endorsement. Other potential contenders discussed include Humphrey McGovern and several major city and state figures.
