SALT II talks move toward equal U S Soviet weapon limits
Secretary Harold Brown in Brussels says SALT II will impose equal limits on nuclear forces with US and USSR. NATO sources cite reductions from about 3 400 to 2 200 systems and a debated neutron bomb compromise. West German and other allies show interest in deploying the weapon, with US deployment decisions remaining with Washington. Brown notes allied fears and says cruise missile deployment is unlikely in the treaty’s first three years.
