The Associated Press reports sixty nine people died in street and highway crashes during Safe Driving Day on December 1, matching a toll on November 17. The figure exceeds the 51 killed on the first observance of SD Day on December 15, 1954, marking another high in highway fatalities. The Weather Bureau’s 20 day outlook predicts temperatures above normal in the Southeast and near normal in the Middle Atlantic states Ohio Valley and West Gulf. Below normal in most of the nation, with coldest in the Northern Plains. Rain and snow are likely above normal near the Mississippi and Ohio Valleys, northern Rockies and West Coast. Subnormal in the Southwest and Southeast, near normal elsewhere.
Indiana's top court crippled state authority over utility rates by upholding Bell Telephone Co. rates fixed years ago. Assistant Public Counselor Gil bert Snider warned the decision could raise rates statewide as utilities file rate cases with the Public Service Commission and, if unsatisfied, pursue court appeals. The PSC noted Bell’s claimed expenses rose since 1951, while the ruling leaves limited PSC leverage and could provoke further challenges.
San Francisco California reports William G. Tittle boilerman second class USN son of Mrs Maes Stepp and husband of Roberta Overholser both of Anderson Indiana serving aboard the attack aircraft carrier USS Wasp at Hunters Point Naval Shipyard. The Wasp is expected to operate off the California coast beginning around January 1956.
A Chicago labor leader Angelo Inciso arrived with two bodyguards and seven cartons of records for a Senate hearing on contempt charges. Subcommittee members postponed a decision to allow him to purge by testifying, with a Saturday deadline set for a ruling.
A London suburban train crash into a freight train at Barnes station killed 12 and injured 35, with 11 of the injured hospitalized. Firefighters fought flames as rescue crews pulled passengers from wreckage and witnesses described a chaotic scene on the bridge over the tracks.
Police say two teens and a 16 year old girl confessed Friday to a Shelbyville hold up after a chase in Indianapolis. The juveniles admitted also raiding a candy store and bakery last month. The girl was captured after a crash. A motel owner reported the youths demanded money and fled.

Officials report a light attack with unclear severity after an incident at Evansville. Mrs. Rita P. Lewis, 49, of Indianapolis, died at home Friday from injuries after a fall on snow covered steps.
Joseph M. Detty, 75, longtime trustee of the Madison County Trades Council and former president of the meat packers' union, died yesterday at 10:45 a.m. at St John's Hospital.

Three large trucks on a snow covered highway east of Fort Wayne Indiana collided in darkness killing Ohio driver Thomas L Hartley 28 Wellston. His westbound semi struck a trailer that had slid across US 30 four miles east of New Haven. A third semi then overturned after hitting the wreckage, taking down a utility pole. Two other truckers Carlie Clark Mannersville Ohio and Edmond Bopes Rock Island Hl remained unhurt.
Ralph A. Horton, 54, of South Bend, was convicted by a Tippecanoe Circuit Court jury of forgery and, after prior auto theft, robbery, and forgery convictions, was sentenced to life in prison as a habitual criminal. He had passed bogus checks in local taverns and was accused of similar frauds in Logansport, Michigan City, South Bend, and several Michigan cities. Indiana University named P. E. Tobin and William Strack to its board of directors to fill vacancies after the deaths of Paul V. McNutt and George A. Ball.
Mr Jordan died Thursday morning at his home on 1509 Shermar Street. Friends will be received today after 8 p.m. at the Underwood Funeral Home.
Dallas Atkinson 68 died after a heart attack at his Ringwood Way residence. He was born in Madison County and lived most of his life here, employed by Nicholson Fire Co. Surviving are his widow Ada Illine, a son Oren Anderson, a brother Raymond Eaton, and five sisters: Alta Card, Larma Couch, Stella Holiday, Charles Moore, and Gertrude Trice. Funeral home arrangements pending.
