Tragic early week highway crashes claim several lives
All Troopers Wannell Alexander 44 and Louise 43 of Richmond were killed in a head-on collision with a truck on a rural highway near Columbus. Four Alexander children injured. 18-year-old daughter and 15-year-old son left at home. The couple had just left Richmond for a Niagara Falls trip. Also killed were Carl Wo Mueller 61 of Fort Wayne after being struck by a car near Fort Wayne. Charles Snider 42 of Fort Wayne struck by a truck. and Stephen Sherman 43 of Royal Center when his trailer truck left U.S. 35 into Pattison Creek near Jonesboro. Autopsy ordered to determine cause of death.

Indiana National Guard to Begin New Armory Center
Construction could start by Oct. 1 on a new training center costing 225 000 to 250 000 dollars. When finished it will serve Headquarters Company 1st Battalion 151st Infantry Company D 1st Infantry and the battalion medical platoon. The armory design allows use as a community center and civic facility as part of a state program authorized by the 1985 Indiana General Assembly. Funding covers 25 percent state and 75 percent federal costs. Additional funding is sought for a motor vehicle storage building at the new site to begin about the same time as the armory. The armory replaces the 7th and Main street building used since 1928 and will be three times larger with a 75 seat dining room and a remodeled basement rest room area. Federal inspections are planned next month for the headquarters and medical unit with range firing for specialists on Oct 13 14 at the state range near Frankfort.

In the new basement level room at the northeast edge of the building space now is provided for additional equipment needed to handle rapidly increasing enrollment.
