President Eisenhower surveyed flood wreckage from the air and pledged swift relief. He urged Congress back if needed and called for rapid Red Cross contributions as officials say over five million dollars are needed for flood relief. Dozens died and billions in losses are reported.
President Eisenhower interrupted a Colorado vacation to inspect flood wreckage in Pennsylvania New Jersey New York and Connecticut. He praised the Red Cross and urged private donations while pledging federal and state cooperation for relief and early aid delivery to stricken communities.
Radio Liberation described Vladimir Matskevich, dean of the visiting Soviet farm delegation, as a former official of the Soviet secret police MVD. The briefing notes Matskevich led the agricultural department of the MVD and cites Korol, a Radio Liberation correspondent, who says he knew Matskevich and other delegation members.
The Berber and tribal factions led by El Gaoui face growing discontent as Marrakech and other Moroccan cities see rising violence. El Gaoui and most Berbers backed Sultan Ben Moulay Arafa, while France’s meddling fuels unrest and potential deposement. An incident at a restaurant drew witness reports and a comment from supervisor Mrs Alley.
A 23 year old teller John Calvin Siemer pled guilty to embezzling more than 65 700 to bet on horses. He fled Staten Island nine months earlier and was arrested July 18 in South Amherst Ohio. FBI recovered about 25 000 of the missing funds. Siemer faces up to five years in prison and a 5000 dollar fine on each of three counts.
