Desalting Plant Produces Too Pure Water
Key West desalting plant yields ultra pure sea water that tastes like fresh water. The facility was built to supply the Florida Keys after Navy water scarcity and conservation limits but the water’s extreme purity requires minerals to avoid pipeline corrosion. The plant now pumps 10 million gallons daily with 262 million gallons of purified water sent to local mains at about 83 cents per thousand gallons, higher than Florida City water.
