Modern Texas ranching shifts from cowboys to corporate operations
An 1882 to 1912 spread from Lubbock to the Oklahoma panhandle covers 860000 acres across six South Texas counties. The LBJ ranch in central Texas remains the best known, with 433 acres along the Pedernales River and 73 more acres across two river tracts. About 30 cattle were on the LBJ home ranch at last report. Cowboys now earn 150 to 600 a month with room and board. many ranches use planes, helicopters, and radiotelephones for management. The King Ranch reportedly holds 900 oil wells and 200 gas wells, underscoring how oil revenue supports big ranches today.
