Agnew Blasts Hatfield McGovern Amendment as Defeat Blueprint
Vice President Spiro Agnew warned at the VFW convention in Miami Beach that the Hatfield McGovern amendment to end the Vietnam War could precipitate the United States first defeat and a bloodbath in Southeast Asia. He said passing the measure would force a U.S. troop pullout by mid-1971, shift the burden to South Vietnam, and invite chaos and communism in the region. McGovern countered that recognizing flawed policy isn’t a defeat and criticized congressional foreign policy powers. Agnew labeled the proposal a blueprint for defeat, while McGovern argued the country misjudged its wartime course.
