Huey Newton, Black Panthers cofounder, is freed on $50,000 bail pending retrial on a serious case charge stemming from a 1967 officer slaying. A crowd outside cheered the move while Newton pledged revolution and supporters called for “Free Huey.” The judge noted double jeopardy risks in retrial.
