Penelope the platypus vanished from the Bronx Zoo after apparently rebuffing her mate Cecil. Officials say Penelope burrowed out of the platypussary and has been missing since July 26, declared missing August 1. Cecil was returned to bachelor quarters after a search found no trace of Penelope.
In Kendallville Indiana the self styled inventor Tate Klink shot and killed a bank cashier after a check was refused. The incident occurred at the Farmers State Bank of LaGrange branch as Klink, who lived near Atwood Lake, fled the scene and was later described as not normal by Sheriff Myron Welker. Prosecutors planned to file first degree murder charges.
Flags flew at half staff nationwide and on ships as former Senator Walter F. George was buried in a sunlit cemetery. Citizens heard him eulogized as a just man with a heart full of sympathy and humility before God.

A Sunday of heavy heat caused multiple drownings as Hoosiers flocked to beaches. Aurora youth Larry Linkmeyer, 18, saved two Cincinnati boys from a sinking car in the Ohio River, pulling them to safety as a woman cried for help. In Lake Michigan, 20-year-old Glenn Ekright of Gary drowned while attempting to recover the body of 18-year-old Wooden Lee Burch from Chicago who had gone underwater earlier.

The Anderson Public Service Committee led by James Lansberry states that City utilities priority lies with City residents. Areas outside the City must provide their own sanitary and storm water disposal, with no City aid or future relief. Annexation fate will guide solutions.

Mrs Martha Wilson 59 lifelong resident of Lapel died Sunday at St John s Hospital in Anderson after brief illness. She belonged to Lapel Methodist Church and was a charter member of the OBES. Surviving relatives include an aunt and several cousins. Funeral services set for 2 p.m Tuesday at Fisher Brothers Funeral Home with Rev Thomas Hodson officiating and burial in Brookside Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home before services.
