Platypus Gate Seeks Missing Mate From Bronx Zoo

Penelope the platypus vanished from the Bronx Zoo after apparently rebuffing her mate Cecil. Officials say Penelope burrowed out of the platypussary and has been missing since July 26, declared missing August 1. Cecil was returned to bachelor quarters after a search found no trace of Penelope.

Eccentric Shoots Cashier Fatally At Kendallville

In Kendallville Indiana the self styled inventor Tate Klink shot and killed a bank cashier after a check was refused. The incident occurred at the Farmers State Bank of LaGrange branch as Klink, who lived near Atwood Lake, fled the scene and was later described as not normal by Sheriff Myron Welker. Prosecutors planned to file first degree murder charges.

Heat Brings Drowning Toll Across Indiana Shores

A Sunday of heavy heat caused multiple drownings as Hoosiers flocked to beaches. Aurora youth Larry Linkmeyer, 18, saved two Cincinnati boys from a sinking car in the Ohio River, pulling them to safety as a woman cried for help. In Lake Michigan, 20-year-old Glenn Ekright of Gary drowned while attempting to recover the body of 18-year-old Wooden Lee Burch from Chicago who had gone underwater earlier.
