Appalachian Families Struggle With Welfare and Poverty

In a West Virginia hollow near Doctors Creek, the Brisendine family and neighbors endure extreme poverty while Hope for a better life resurfaces. Ex-coal miner and father Stopout Brisendine, 43, works toward a new trade as his wife Lucille tends six children. The family, burned out by mine closures, survives on welfare with two rooms, a dirt yard, and shared wells, hoping Brisendine’s retraining and a high school equivalency diploma will end welfare dependency. Local officials note the two-state region hosts many similar families clinging to a difficult, aging economy.
