McGovern Deficit Cut Proposal Faces Senate Vote Today

Democratic candidate George McGovern proposes a four billion dollar cut to the Pentagon budget as an amendment to the defense spending authorization. He argues the reduction would not target specific programs and would allow the Pentagon to set priorities within a ceiling, bringing defense outlays to the prior year's level before the election. The plan aims to redirect funds to health care, jobs, and education while Nixon seeks a broader cap for next year. In related moves, the Senate approved one procurement amendment and withdrew another as debates continued over Israel aid and the SAM-D missile program. The report also notes the death of Maxine Boger and obituary details.
