Blumenthal backs Carter on overhaul of tax system
Washington Secretary Blumenthal said the U S tax system is a disgrace to the human race and that Americans pay too much in taxes with too many loopholes. He supported reform, noting the burden remains high as living standards lag and a taxpayer revolt grows. He favors targeted income tax cuts over Social Security rollbacks to curb inflation and spur growth.

Richmond 1968 Explosion Remembered as City Rebuilds
Ten years after the Richmond blast that killed 41 and injured over 100, the city recalls April 6 1968. The explosion leveled a block, damaged miles of area, and sparked a multiyear rebuilding effort costing over 11.4 million dollars. The Downtown Promenade now stands where Main Street once lived, with plans for a memorial and a block westward extension. Local residents and workers united to save lives in a day Richmond will never forget. Alma Newberry and Marjorie Daubenspeck will speak at the International Reading Association conference on April 14 15 at the Holiday Inn and Terre Haute South Vigo High School.
