Elephant seal rescues rise across California amid breeding season

30 pounds too low for seal status. 80 elephant seals rescued by Marine Mammal Care Center Los Angeles this year, up from 48 last year. Sea World San Diego treated 30, up from 16. Sausalito center reported 196 rescues, second highest in 42 years. NOAA notes need for further studies. UC Santa Cruz researcher Don Costa links storms to orphaned pups.
