Anaheim residents seek curb on drugs and prostitution

About 60 residents and business owners met with Anaheim police at the Brookhurst Community Center to discuss Beach Boulevard woes. Police Chief John Welter and Lt. Eric Trapp urged public input and planned a follow up August 20 to form subcommittees and pursue solutions. Since January 1, police logged at least 220 calls for service in the Beach Boulevard corridor, resulting in 180 arrests for narcotics and at least 25 prostitution arrests. Community members expressed cautious optimism as motel managers joined the discussion.

Mother of slain son leads Anaheim protest toward Disneyland

About 50 demonstrators march from the Anaheim Police Department to the Disneyland entrance with signs and chants against police violence. Roughly 20 officers on horseback observe as no clashes or arrests occur, contrasting with last week's riot that left 10 under arrest. Theresa Smith, mother of Caesar Cruz shot by police in 2009, helped start the weekly vigils and plans to step back, hoping an independent review and federal probe proceed. She now aids families and feeds the homeless while urging peaceful action in her son's honor.
