In Lawton Oklahoma on March 21, a planned white against black confrontation near Waurika did not materialize. Despite threats, order was restored and more black residents arrived, with deputies returning as both sides claim their safety cannot be guaranteed.
Mrs Pattison of Grace was surprised yesterday by eighteen G A R ladies in this city. They brought baskets and hosted a large dinner at noon, sharing an old fashioned afternoon with guests including Madames Stabler Hess Vedder Andrews Loomis Cleveland Cooper Conover Delay Pruett Aldridge Becker Campbell Ritchey Pratt Smith and Stockton.
N N Brown aged about sixty died last night of apoplexy at his home near the corner of Ninth and North Boundary streets. He leaves a wife and eight children. He was a member of the First Baptist Church. Funeral services were held at his residence this afternoon at three o'clock, conducted by Rev. Skagge, with burial in the city cemetery. J G Finch of Alden attended probate court in the city today.
Mrs J T Thompson bought a hat yesterday and read in the Democrat of a comet approaching Earth. She sighed she should have waited until after next Friday to catch a hat at a fire sale price, leaving the sheriff puzzled by the melancholy.
C. C. Branner Special Inspector of Indian affairs, after several days in the city, departed last evening for his home in Osage, Oklahoma.
St Louis March 21 Former United States Senator Joseph R Burton of Kansas to be freed early tomorrow morning after six months in Ironton Missouri jail He was convicted of aiding a post office graft and taking compensation as a senate member He said he would travel to St Louis spend a few hours then proceed to Abilene Kansas to make a public statement Saturday night
Washington reports steps to cancel proofs that let Governor Crawford of South Dakota gain lands. Secretary Garfield says criminal prosecutions are barred by statute of limitations, but proofs may be suspended and canceled, restoring land to public domain.
Boone Hite of Ft. Cobb reports his appointment as Brigadier in the Oklahoma Division of the United Sons of Confederate Veterans. He will appoint ten aids, organize a special train to Jamestown Exposition via St Louis and Chicago, with costs under 25 dollars plus sleeping car fare, inviting interested men to write to him for details.
In jail is A. L. Fisher who was charged with embezzlement and held for grand jury action. His bondsmen turned him over to authorities and he was placed in the county jail.
