Custer’s 7th Cavalry Crushes Sioux and Cheyenne at Washita
An 1868 Washita raid recounts General Sheridan naming Custer to pursue the warring tribes. Eight companies of the 7th Cavalry attack under bitter cold, surprise the Indian camp, and rout the defenders. About 150 Indians lie dead, several women prisoners rescued or killed, and survivors driven back toward the reservation.
