The article recalls Haskell’s Oklahoma campaign appearances in Caddo county and a controversial Hin ton program that left attendees worn out. It notes Taft’s national talk against constitutional provisions, and includes a resignation letter from Frank Wrantz praising rapid statehood and endorsing the proposed constitution and its supporters.
R A White editor of the Courier Oklahoma Post renounces the Republican party in an editorial titled Emancipation Proclamation. He says he has been a party slave for years and will run the paper along independent lines, tired of others profiting while he toiled.
Sulphur, August 25. J. T. Sulphur says he supports immediate Statehood and to ensure adoption of the constitution and consistent laws, he plans to vote for known friends. J. P. Lockwood, Republican county committeeman, resigns, criticizes Frantz and Gov. candidate. Powell, chairman, comments.
The fourteenth annual state Sunday School Convention convened Aug 20 22 at Shawnee with about 3000 delegates and friends attending. The program spanned three days featuring speakers W F Long Texas Sunday School assoc Marlon Lawrence and W N Wiggins. The Bible Study and Teachers Training Dept graduated 43. Cando county contributed 16. C V Liming led the department and presided as county association president. Alumni formed, banquet at 530 pm with 50 plates. Liming spoke on the importance of teacher training. Officers elected Elise El Reno president Mrs Keeler Anadarko secretary D J Ee Eakly vice president to meet in Tulsa.
Weather forecast for Washington with a brief forecast for August 25 indicates fair conditions. Oklahoma and Indian Territory expected to remain dry and clear with no precipitation anticipated. The report notes tranquil atmospheric conditions across regions.
In Oklahoma City Secretary Taft spoke at Convention Hall against statehood, urging restraint and warning that Oklahoma’s admission would aid Republican electoral aims. The Oklahoma Post criticizes the speech as a thin plea for Taft and questions the constitutionality and timing of statehood.
Mrs A Ben Popejoy and her little son arrive yesterday morning from the east where they spent the past two months. Mr Popejoy met them at Oklahoma City. Mrs Popejoy, once a popular music teacher, has been pursuing study at the University of Pennsylvania and the Broad Street Conservatory. On the way home she passed through Norfolk New York City Buffalo and other points. She will not resume teaching for several weeks to rest after her hard study.
The city plant, under new superintendent Neil Kunkel with Eccleston and Coggine, has been repaired and is largely functional. Boilers, pumps, and valves were fixed or installed, electric light insertion made possible, and water pressure restored for all uses despite past delays and limited means.
