Northern Montana residents back Stanford man as convention gathers in Great Falls today Smaller counties likely to line up solidly behind him as momentum builds through the district
A Montana Republican convention in Great Falls is delayed by a burned bridge on the Montana Central, keeping key delegations from arriving before midnight. Northern Montana delegates form a boom for J F E Bower of Stanford while other candidates like J F Richards F J Edwards and Joseph M Dixon receive mention.
Great Falls dispatch reports Engineer Wilson saved Train No. 24 and the freight train as a wooden bridge near Mitchell burned. Passengers were transferred to stubs and other trains. Bridge damage estimated at 150 feet. repairs expected next day. Delegates bound for republican state convention continued their journey with limited cars and crowded conditions.
Train No. 24 will pass to Havre tomorrow morning if the bridge is finished tonight as expected. Train No. 23 was assembled at Havre from existing equipment and held a couple of hours for the westbound main line train on the Great Northern, arriving two hours late this afternoon.
David A. Sinclair long prominent Dayton Ohio citizen and 33 year secretary of the YMCA there died in a Billings hospital after being taken from a Northern Pacific train on August 20. He had traveled to Idaho for health, suffered a paralysis stroke near Livingston, and died of brain softening. His body will be sent to Dayton with his wife and Rev. W D Clark.
Mrs. John O'Brien travels from Butte to Helena to urge Governor Toole to grant clemency for her son John O'Brien who is halfway through a five year manslaughter term. The case stems from a 2 year old incident outside a Butte saloon when he stabbed Thompson during a drunken confrontation.
Special Dispatch reports Billings suffers a coal famine as local dealers run out. Additional carloads arrived from Red Lodge but supply remains tight because the Northern Pacific is consuming nearly all output from the Red Lodge mines.
In Indianapolis on September 26 doctors F B Wynne Charles E Ferguson and W S Dodde reported microscopic tests of Roosevelt wound contents found no trace of dangerous matter in the serum.
Dillon notes record of Montana Pioneers meeting with 16 new members added and debates over preserving pioneer data. Collins and Holter win top posts as Great Falls chosen to host next year, with numerous vice presidents named across counties.
Paris reports Joan W. Young, father of William Hooper Young, says published accounts and cables convince him his son is innocent. He claims his son is wayward but not criminal, possibly set up by a designing person, and notes a clothing clue misleads investigators. He denies Mormon Church ties and says he was unaware his son lived in his apartments.
The Rocky Mountain Bell Telephone Company employees in Montana Idaho and Utah strike after a wage demand of 90 dollars per month for monthly workers in Great Falls and Josie Idaho and 3 25 to 3 50 per day for line and toll line workers with nine hours daily plus board. Local 122 Great Falls and Local 291 Boise are recognized while Butte and Anaconda are excluded.
Helena Sept 264 The district court granted Jennie Hageman a decree of separation from Charles Hageman Jr and awarded custody of their baby but denied alimony. The suit cited years of cruel and inhuman treatment including multiple assaults and threats with a knife revolver and beer bottle.
The Montana state labor convention backed Martin Dee for Congress with a unanimous ballot after Dan McDonald declined. The meeting named a conference and executive committee, elected central members, and adjourned at 11. Dee, a longtime Butte labor leader, has a mining and engineering background and earlier served in the legislature.
Helena reports the death in New York City of Duncan Hunter a former Helena resident who later lived in Providence Rhode Island He was known in Montana years ago for cattle business with W F Melnick and C J Steadman and for Bear Gulch mining interests After leaving Helena he married Miss Lippett daughter of a former Rhode Island governor
Charles Larson swears out a warrant against Ed Taylor of Chinook for obtaining money under false pretenses. Taylor allegedly sold 159 raffle chances at a dollar each for a horse valued at 156 dollars then gave the animal to Bob Lockhart without a raffle. Donatahie Buckley of Harlem was sent to arrest him after the trail led toward Harlem.
Lieutenant Colonel T. C. Forsythe retired died today at Sweet Chalybeate Springs Virginia. He will be remembered by older Montanans for serving for several years at various Montana posts in territorial days.
Ed Walling Robert Warner Al Glover and Fred Moris were arraigned before Justice Fraser on second degree assault. They allegedly assaulted ranch hand Jim Miller two nights earlier nearly beating him to death and breaking his leg. Each man is held on $500 bond for a preliminary exam on October 4. Report says they are scale mandolin players rather than piano players.
In Bozeman on September 26 a stabbing affray occurred in a downtown saloon. Clary and Maddox fought. Maddox was stabbed in the arm. No arrests were made as Maddox refused to file a complaint amid the thrashing crowds caused by storms.
