In the Mining District a large reception for Smith is planned in Butte this afternoon amid ongoing oil scandal tensions. The Madrid fire disaster is reported with about 100 dead and smoldering debris not yet fully cleared.
About 100 bodies were recovered from the Novedades theater ruins after a Sunday fire turned a performance into a disaster. Fire chief estimated as many as 40 more may be found, with total toll possibly 120. Whole families perished in upper galleries as stairs clogged and crowds fled. Many bodies unidentified as relatives press morgue lines.
Philip Elting, collector of the port, ruled that Mme. Ganna Walska is a resident of America and that clothing and jewels worth about 2.5 million dollars brought into the country last week are dutiable. The trunks were held at the customs house while appraisal begins to determine the duty.
Two Sicilians faced grand jury indictments on kidnapping and extortion charges as part of a Mafia blackmail syndicate preying on Illinois residents. A 10 year old kidnap victim testified, identifying Petitti and a principal ransom recipient. The Ranieri family faced renewed threats as investigators pursued alleged masterminds and a $60,000 ransom link.
Russell St Clair Beitzel was sentenced to be hanged for the murder of his waitress sweetheart Barbara Mauger 19 whose body was found in a canyon above Hollywood weeks earlier. The execution date was not fixed but likely December 30 and Beitzel accepted the sentence calmly.
Missoula Montana September 24 Mrs Amelia G Fisher 85 was instantly killed by the eastbound Northern Pacific train No 4 at East Missoula while walking on the railroad track. She suffered a fractured skull and both legs severed. Fisher who had become feeble lived with granddaughter Mrs Harry Dettine and was seen about the house this afternoon before being missed shortly after 4 o clock.
Helena Mont September 24 The Montana state fair opens with Governor Alfred E Smith in attendance and predicts a new weekly attendance record if favorable weather continues. About 20 000 crowd on opening day equals last year and exhibitors fill all buildings with record variety of county displays and tents. Seven races ran today with six more planned tomorrow.
Honolulu reports the grand jury indicted 19 year old Myles Yutaka Fukunaga for murder in the kidnapping and slaying of 10 year old Gill Jamieson. The case is compared to the Marian Parker tragedy as authorities plan an early trial.
Senator Curtis referenced Governor Smith at a Denver rally drawing two hecklers. Police ejected both amid crowd confusion. One heckler, a woman, repeatedly shouted about the Sidewalks of New York.

Chicago September 24 Representative Fred B Purnell ranking member of the house agriculture committee will substitute for Senator Charles Curtis Republican vice presidential candidate at outdoor speeches. The substitution follows a physician order citing risk to Curtis voice if he continues outdoor appearances.
Governor Smith accuses the Republican administration of national affairs since 1920 of treason official corruption and crime. He argues Hoover’s record over seven and a half years shows moral and political failure while Democratic rhetoric emphasizes accountability. Continued on Page 2.
