In Oakland California Governor Cox arraigned sugar profiteers and urged Congress to fund a rotary sugar purchase to curb profiteering. He warned profiteers tied to the Republican campaign fund and linked radicalism to profiteering while citing war losses and the need for government relief in emergencies. Six individuals and the Grays Harbor Motor ship corporation were found not guilty by a federal court jury in Seattle. Defendants include Bruce C. Shorts Monty Ward A B Shay and A B Hoonan officers of the Grays Harbor corporation and Capt W A Magee and A B Hunt former North Pacific district officials of the emergency fleet corporation. Albert Schubach president of the motorship corporation was released yesterday after a directed verdict of acquittal.
Polish forces seize the Red Fortress and push a major advance along a 240 mile front against Soviet troops. The victory marks significant gains on the eastern battlefield amid continuous siege operations and heavy fighting near fortified positions.
Polish forces push east of Vladimir Volhynsk and southeast of Brest Litovsk. They seize Lutsk and occupy Porezkov Chorostov Kamien and Kaspirzki, taking 1000 Soviet prisoners and gathering war materiel. Insurgent bands reported near Pinsk as Poles press toward the Dniester.
In Paris on September 18 the League of Nations council continued discussion of the Poland Lithuania boundary quarrel amid sporadic hostilities. The council, hearing Lithuanian Foreign Minister Woldemar and former Polish premier Ignace Paderewski, failed to decide jurisdiction since Lithuania is not a league member and will reconvene Sunday.
