Early returns from about three quarters of Maine show Hale and Baxter elected with a decisive Democratic gain. The report notes the state carried by 60 to 40 percentage points and indicates rising Democratic support in the overall vote.
Maine voters deliver downbeat results for Republicans Senator Hale and Governor Baxter with majorities well below 1920 figures. Early returns show Hale 98 883 to Curtis 73 178 and Baxter 102 590 to Pattangall 74 068 with four Republican congressmen likely reelected in Maine.
Doctor Sawyer reports Mrs Harding Magh Sliter is getting along very nicely with attending physicians noting hopeful signs. The statement comes as medical officials describe the patient’s condition as improving and stable.

Maj. C. Maclaurin officer in charge of the Dominion government air station was drowned when the seaplane he piloted plunged into four feet of water near Point Grey. The body was not recovered as the machine remained afloat. Passenger John R. Duncan and mechanician A L Hartridge were injured.
A mass meeting of active miners will be held this Tuesday at 8 o clock in the high school auditorium. The aim is to decide action regarding the so called strike, which the committee says active workers in the Butte mines do not support. Representants from every property are urged to attend and express opinions freely. The committee urges mine committees be formed and credentialed representatives provided.
Washington September 11 impeachment charges against Attorney General Daugherty were presented in the house by Rep Keller of Minnesota. The charges stem from his petition for an injunction in the railway employes cases and were referred after a brief flurry. Continued on Page 6 Column 5.
In Jackson California on September 1 a rescue operation fights through 93 feet of drift to reach 47 trapped miners at the Argonaut mine. Progress on blasting from the Kennedy shaft continues slowly as officials deny gas exposure claims and describe fatigue from the ascent.
Victoria Morsillo, 5, daughter of Mr and Mrs Joseph Morsillo of 53 Porphyry Street, died after her dress caught fire from a playmate's match. She endured seven hours of agony before dying at St James Hospital at 9 46 p m. Parents and bystanders donated blood during transfusion efforts. The incident occurred while children played near a neighbor’s yard. no adults knew matches were involved.
More than 16 000 Butte children registered yesterday for the fall semester in the public and parochial schools. The picture shows a group of youngsters primed for the first bell and mothers at a schoolhouse guiding first graders into the new term.
Butte area schools start fall term with 6 598 students in public schools and 3 565 in parochial schools including Catholic Central high school. Public enrollment down from 1921 and 1920 while parochial shows slight gains. Superintendent Douglass notes drop mainly in grammar grades due to families leaving the city. Father Leonard expresses satisfaction with Central high school enrollment.
An opening day incident at the West Side continuation school reveals a legitimate excuse from a student who said he had to meet his wife at the train. The school serves boys and girls under 17 who work part time.
Registration figures show 10163 for 1921 and 10245 for 1920 across all schools. An additional 105758 appears to be a typographical error in the record.
Eastern chief railroads led by New York Central Erie Lackawanna and Lehigh Valley imposed a broad embargo on freight competing with coal shipments stopping nearly all westbound freight at connecting points except foodstuffs. A strike vote by freight handlers and station workers was also ordered after management refused union recognition.
A motor truck carrying 22 passengers plunged through a bridge into the Satilla River near Homerville Georgia. Eighteen Black men and boys are believed drowned with four survivors and two dozen involved as laborers and fans. The bridge failure trapped many inside the vehicle and hindered rescue efforts.
The Hammond Lumber company mill and kilns in Astoria Oregon were destroyed by fire causing about 1 000 000 dollars in losses. The blaze occurred tonight and left the site a total ruin with extensive damage to equipment and facilities.
Conferees on the soldiers' bonus bill reached agreement and will report to the house, then move to the senate after tariff actions. Four changes include dropping financing from foreign debt interest, restricting bonus filing to Jan 1 1928, altering farm aid to 125 percent of adjusted service credit, and keeping unchanged the adjusted service certificate option and cash aid for small credits.
