Campaigns of 1856 shaping party lines in Pennsylvania
A retrospective essay notes the 1856 election where Buchanan won Pennsylvania by minority split between Fremont and Fillmore. It details the birth of the Republican party, its Pittsburgh convention, and Greeley’s anti Pierce campaigning.
