Washington day’s events show shifts in policy and leadership
Automobile fatalities declined in the four weeks ending August 15. Thomas F. Cooper of Kentucky became chief of the bureau of economics, and Rear Admiral Julius A. Bostwick was named chief of staff of the United States. Bert E. Haney of Oregon, a shipping board commissioner, faced resignation urged by President Coolidge, with assurances of protection for lives and property during the anthracite strike. The senate recount in the town election contest produced decisive results on challenged votes.
