Five Years in Prison for Counterfeiting in Butte

William Doherty was sentenced to five years in the penitentiary and a $1,000 fine by Judge Knowles for passing a counterfeit $10 gold piece at O Neill's saloon on April 29. He smiled at friends as the verdict was announced. Doherty had prior terms and a linked past involving an Idaho prison sentence for killing a partner. He and Weber were indicted for counterfeiting. Weber was acquitted. Doherty’s long, violent history includes a fatal confrontation in a Coeur d’Alene mine area and a casino fracas where Doherty’s dog was killed. Despite a reputation for loyalty and generosity, Doherty faces a hard future after the sentence.
