In Scranton on October 12 a 157 member convention of anthracite miners debated the operators 10 percent wage offer and the abolition of the sliding scale in favor of a tonnage basis. Delegates pressed for concessions on grievances and questioned wage timing while President Mitchell urged calm and unity. The meeting opened with strong support for Mitchell and adjourned after routine credential reports.
The Independent Democratic convention at Odd Fellows hall in this city delegates from Great Falls Belt Neihart and others adopted a platform endorsing Bryan and Stevenson. They denounced Clark and the Helena ticket, pledged an eight hour day and coal miners' rights, and nominated a full county ticket with Jere B. Leslie for district judge and George P. Mallen for clerk of court among others. A pistol volley near the stage startled attendees but caused no injuries.
President Mitchell urged delegates to decide on the operators wage advance, stressing heavy responsibility and the need for careful, timely action. He warned against rushing and urged members to vote only when certain they are right as the convention moved to executive session.
Hazelton Pa October 12 Coxe Brothers & Co of Drifton asked Sheriff Harvey for protection against about 500 strikers threatening repair crews at Derringer colliery and terrorizing families. A militia detachment near Mahanoy City and Derringer stood ready. Carron colliery shut after strikers warned of consequences.
One hundred section hands brought by Central Vermont Railroad for replacements refuse to work after learning they were to replace strikers. Police concentrate near an Italian saloon where Italian workers from New York are drinking heavily as tensions rise.
London reported the day after the election shows unionists gaining four seats and liberals three. Parliament stands 685 ministerialists and 242 opposition from a 625 seat total. Harcourt, Liberal, re-elected in the western division of Monmouthshire with a 3,575 majority over Conservative Gardner, 5,976 to 6,741 votes.
The Montana Supreme Court spent the day hearing mandamus petitions from Ravalli county Democratic candidates seeking ballot placement. Justices Ward recused himself after announcing potential conflict and will not participate. Additional writs and filings were anticipated for Deer Lodge Granite counties and Meagher county Clark candidates.
Special Dispatch to the Standard Hamilton Oct 12. The largest audience yet at the Lucas Opera house greeted E. D. Matta and Hon. E. M. Lamb. Lamb spoke on national questions from the democratic view, praised by listeners, then attacked W. A. Clark. Matts, a familiar figure in Bitter Root, was greeted warmly and recalled his earlier senatorial election support. The crowd showed strong political engagement as the rally closed.
Manager Matts spoke on national issues before an audience in Ravalli County last month. His masterly remarks drew frequent applause and speculation about what would happen to the Vindicators in the coming month.
White Sulphur Springs Oct. 12 Special Dispatch reports the Clark ticket has collapsed in Meagher County. Dr Parbery the Clark nominee for Senator refuses to run, and Clark nominations were repudiated in a rump convention. County Clerk Pierce declines listing them as Democratic. Independent Democrats gain control of the camp.
Kronberg Prussia October 12 reports indicate the Dowager Empress Frederick is severely ill doctors say the condition has reached an acute stage in recent days but may improve soon Professor Penvers of Berlin has been summoned to assist in her care
London dispatch quotes Berlin Daily Telegraph correspondent stating the Empress Frederick is in precarious health and Emperor William has canceled all engagements for the present.
In Portsmouth Ohio on October 12 Bryan opened his Ohio tour with a large enthusiastic rally after a torchlight procession. He framed his remarks around trusts and monopoly, contrasted farmers and agriculturists, and challenged Republican positions while noting German voters present at Dayton. He then spoke in Portsmouth and planned a Chillicothe stop next.
In Kenton Ohio Oct 12 a large crowd welcomed William Jennings Bryan who lauded the public service ideal and urged voters to judge candidates by their platforms. He criticized Republicans for prioritizing money and rhetoric over human rights and government integrity, promising to carry out pledges if elected.
