The American Federation of Labor through its executive council issues a public appeal on behalf of striking miners. It places blame for the present hardship on operators and urges support from readers and charitable groups.
The American Federation of Labor Executive Council released an address to the public and organized labor urging financial and moral support for the enduring strike of the anthracite miners. It blames coal company presidents for the unrest and calls for relief committees, miners hour, and church and press participation to sustain the miners through the crisis. The appeal lists signatories including Samuel Gompers and James Duncan and directs contributions to W. B. Wilson in Indianapolis.
President Roosevelt seeks federal action to settle the coal strike and weighs a middle ground of arbitration. Cabinet members and advisers study applicable laws, with little progress but hopes that both miners and operators may accept arbitration in some form for the public welfare.
In New York City no signs emerged that the coal strike would end soon. Secretary of War Root and J. P. Morgan held hours of talks, then drove to the Union Club where Morgan stayed late. D. H. Bacon and Erie chairman Thomas also appeared, with Platt discussed in private. A later report denied plans for more talks with Quay Platt and Penrose on Tuesday.
In Boston on October 11 the Massachusetts Democratic Club hosted a dinner for governor candidate William A. Gaston. Speakers included Richard Olney and Josiah Quincy with Olney urging the party toward liberty under law and criticizing Republican dominance and business influence.
Four men held up Burlington train No. 41 four miles from Lincoln Nebraska using dynamite on the express car. They rifled the safe, taking gold coins and other valuables while passengers and crew were kept safe. Police hounds pursued the robbers as a nationwide alert went out. Reward posted.
Special Dispatch to the Standard from Billings October 11. Dick Hicks a former stock agent well known across Eastern Montana and Wyoming shot and killed a man in Gillette Wyoming after a saloon quarrel escalated into gunfire. A bystander stepping in received a bullet through the heart. Hicks has a historical record of gunfire in Billings but has lived in Gillette in recent years.
Cheyenne Wyoming October 11 The second day of the Horn trial yielded no dramatic events with ten prosecution witnesses describing the scene near the homicide and the search for clues. Parents and relatives of the slain Willie Nickell testified as the defense signaled plans to argue the killing was by a boy who shared quarters with Willie and had threatened him. Court adjourned until 9 Monday morning.
In Great Falls on October 11 the Republican gathering was held in a store room on Central avenue. E. D. Weed of Helena served as principal speaker with Sam Stephens presiding at the meeting.
General Nord war minister of the provisional government is defeated and retreats from Limbe after burning Port Margot. Artibonite forces capture prisoners and two rapid fire guns. General Salnave presses advances as Nord runs low on ammunition and may abandon his base.
Charles Merritt and his wife and Isabelle Harthorn were arraigned before Justice Fraser on charges of trying to prevent James Miller from testifying in the Walling assault case. They pleaded not guilty and were remanded to jail in $200 bonds each. Examination set for Monday.
A. B. Chinn a leading dry goods merchant and former Confederate soldier was shot dead in his Lexington home as two masked burglars entered his bedroom. His son Asa, awakened by the noise, fired through a closed door and was likely mortally wounded when the intruders returned fire. Citizens and police scour the area for the assailants.
Mexico City October 11 report that the wage dispute between National Railroad of Mexico and its employees is settled. Engineers and conductors receive an average 15 percent increase.
Congressman John L. Sheppard of Texarkana Texas died in Eureka Springs Arkansas after a long illness. He served in Congress representing Texas and was noted for his obituary in Washington.
Reports from Burlington official Hildredge say the Omaha express hold up near Lincoln likely involved a large loss though the exact sum is undetermined. Messenger Lupton hid much money in the safe under a stove, escaping robbers, with gold and silver in the pouch.
